Hi, my loves,
I recently watched A24’s new film Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. This film explores the relationship between former best friends Mother Mary and Sam Anslem, her designer as the ghosts of their past continue to haunt them.
If you know me, you know I love films that focus on inner work, women’s relationships with one another, and spirituality. Mother Mary covers each of these topics masterfully. I was captivated by the use of color, specifically the complementary use of blue and red, which offset the character’s emotional journey.
In part 1 of my analysis, I focus on Michaela Coel’s character Sam Anslem. I discuss the role of race, gender, and class in her journey of becoming. Anslem provides a lens through which the emotions of pain, grief, anger, hate, and sadness can break us open – forcing us to create ourselves from the ashes of what remains after our lives are unceremoniously changed.
This is only the beginning, though. In Part 2, we’ll cover Anne Hathaway’s character of Mother Mary before we conclude with Part 3 – integration.
See you soon!
With love,
Kamilah Rose
