New Moon in Taurus: Grounding in the Present through the Senses – The Power of the Erotic

Hi my loves,

I have been so deep in my living astrology that I was not even planning to write about this new moon in Taurus. If you are in the DFW and want to participate in a new moon or full moon event with me, check out my Where to Find Me page for local events.

This new moon is a wonderful opportunity to plant (perhaps literally) the seeds of your dreams and desires. All of this Pisces energy brought our dreams and connection to Source to the forefront of our awareness. Some folks have been ready to receive, some curious about where this could go, and others heading down the seductive route of escapism into the fantasy of what COULD be. The activation of the opposing Virgo energy brings us back to the body and the physical. What’s going on down here on Earth? How do we make the dreams a reality? Moreover, in our daily life, what behaviors need to be released, shifted, or increased to make this happen?

Taurus, ruled by Venus, as fixed Earth grounds that wild, survival-focused, arousing Aries energy. It helps make it sustainable because lust and fervor can burn out quickly. Venus the planet of beauty, balance, peace, and battle, shows us in Taurus through the physical manifestations of these topics. Beauty in the body, aesthetics, and most importantly, the senses. There are several types of senses that humans have, but we generally focus on what are called the Big 5 – sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch. The largest sensory organ is the skin, but the mind is how we interpret and understand the information that our sensory organs receive from the world around us.

Taurus asks, What brings me physical embodied peace, and how do I figure this out? The scent of roses may be soothing, sexy, and romantic to one person, while to someone else, roses smell terrible. We all interpret sensory information differently. These experiences can then become associated with certain emotions, physical sensations within the body, memories, and people.

This new moon I’ve focused all on the senses. The rise of the attention economy driven by social media and digital services has shown us how valuable what can catch and hold our attention is. Audre Lorde in Uses of the Erotic, the Erotic as Power, says

The very word erotic comes from the Greek word eros, the personification of love in all its aspects – born of Chaos, and personifying creative power and harmony. When I speak of the erotic, then, I speak of it as an assertion of the lifeforce of women; of that creative energy empowered, the knowledge and use of which we are now reclaiming in our language, our history, our dancing, our loving, our work, our lives.

When I saw Eros I immediately thought of astrology and Mars, but also of our relationship to our bodies, the power to create, and the attention creation requires. Eros, the erotic, and Mars speak to passion, pleasure, and pain. The giving and taking of life, both of others and ourselves. And when we are fully aware of this power and in tune with it, what can we accomplish?

Where does your attention go? How much of your attention goes to your present experience? In the present moment, how often are you able to tune into your senses?

Let’s do a quick exercise.

From the senses that are available to you, name three things that you can:

  • See
  • Hear
  • Smell
  • Taste
  • Physically can feel through touch

Was it difficult to do this for any of your senses? Did any of your answers surprise you? Did you find your attention shifting during the exercise? Wanting to drift to another tab on your computer, scroll through social media, take a drink of water, or answer someone near you?

Our ability to be present and connect to our lived experience is vital to determining what heals and what hurts. To identify what brings us pleasure and pain, which is important when they can be the same.

If you’re feeling burnt out, engaging the senses can help you to blow some air onto those last few embers and get fired back up.

Perhaps your inner emotional well is running low, how do you refill that cup?

The mind interprets all of the information we receive, but what happens when we are overwhelmed, anxious, or feeling uninterested in the world around us?

Our body is the soil that houses all of our elements. But what about when the body doesn’t feel safe? When we don’t “feel” anything?

Coming back to the senses,

  • Finding something that catches your eye that you can’t look away from. Perhaps it lights up a spark within you, brings up an emotion, makes you physically move towards or away from it.
  • A scent that makes you turn towards it, seeking its source or covering your nose to block it.
  • Is it music to your ears or just plain noise? No longer in the background, a sound that catches your attention is signaling a message to you. What does it mean? What do you feel emotionally when hearing it?
  • Stopping everything just to eat. To tear through the food item and let the flavors wash over your tongue. The feel of it in your mouth. Is it juicy? Tough? Hot or cold? Does it make you close your eyes and sigh with pleasure or plug your nose to chug it back?
  • Lastly, when was the last time you were touched softly, gently, slowly? When was the last time you intentionally reached out to feel the world around you?

Pisces asks us to dream of the future, Virgo says to be aware of the present and what needs to change to get to the future. Taurus invites us to revel in the lived experience. To take it in. To use that information to guide you. You do not have to guess at what you enjoy or what you would like, you’re receiving feedback on that every day. Use that awareness.

Empowerment happens in the present. Transformation and change occur one choice at a time. Make decisions consciously and watch your life change.

With love,
